What is a direct booking — and why is it worth more?

A direct booking is one a guest makes with the business itself — on its website, by phone, by email or at the desk. No marketplace sits in between and no commission leaves with the booking. For a hotel or restaurant it is usually the most valuable booking there is — not only because it costs less, but because of what comes with it.

Why is a direct booking worth more?

Three reasons. It costs less to win: there is no commission, only the marketing that produced it. It comes with the guest: their real email address, their preferences and their permission to hear from you again — the start of a relationship rather than a transaction. And it keeps control with you: the rate, the room, the offer and every message before arrival. The channel mix shows the difference in money; the guest record shows it for years afterwards.

What stops guests booking direct?

Friction and doubt. A slow site, rates hidden behind three clicks, a booking path with more steps than the marketplace, a price that looks higher, or a final page that adds fees nobody mentioned. Guests also book where they feel safe, and a familiar marketplace can feel safer than an unfamiliar website. Every one of these can be fixed, and most cost less than a season of commission.

Guests book where it feels easiest and safest. Make that your own website.

How do you win more of them?

Make the website the best place to book: fast on a phone, clear rates on the first screen, a booking path with fewer steps than the online travel agents, and a secure payment page that looks like the brand. Give a reason to book direct that isn’t a lower price — a better choice of room, breakfast, a late checkout, a table held for dinner. Then look after the guests you already have: past guests who hear from you well tend to come back direct.

Common questions

Is a direct booking always cheaper for the hotel?

Not automatically. It carries no commission, but it does carry the cost of the marketing that produced it. Measured honestly, per booking, direct usually still wins — which is why owners should see cost per booking by channel every month.

Should direct rates be lower than the OTAs’?

Many contracts restrict that, and what is allowed varies by market. Adding value — breakfast, flexibility, a better room — is usually safer and does more for the brand than cutting the price.

Does direct booking matter for restaurants and spas?

Yes. A table or treatment booked on your own site comes with the guest’s details and no platform fee, and the same rule holds: make your own booking path the easiest one.

What should happen after a direct booking?

A confirmation that looks like the brand, a useful message before arrival, and a thank-you afterwards. That is where a direct booking starts paying back.
