What is brand architecture for hotels?

A hotel is rarely one brand. It is a master brand with a restaurant, a bar, a spa, perhaps a beach club and a kids club inside it. Brand architecture is the set of rules for how those pieces relate — what carries the hotel’s name, what has a name of its own, and how the two are shown together.

What are the options?

Three, broadly. Branded: the outlet is simply part of the hotel — the spa is the hotel’s spa, named and designed as the hotel. Endorsed: the outlet has its own name, with the hotel standing behind it. Standalone: the outlet has its own name and identity, and could trade anywhere. Most properties use a mix — which is exactly why the rules need writing down.

How do you choose?

Ask who the outlet is for. If it mainly serves hotel guests, the hotel’s name reassures them — keep it branded. If it must win local diners or members who would never think of eating in a hotel, give it room to stand on its own. Then ask where it might go next: a concept that could open on other sites needs a name that isn’t tied to one address.

Without the rules, every outlet argues for its own logo — and the lobby ends up with six of them.

What does it prevent?

A lobby of competing logos. Signage that leaves guests unsure what belongs to the hotel. Marketing budgets split across names nobody recognises. And, later, an expensive renaming when an outlet outgrows the place it was named for. Settled early, brand architecture tells the naming, the signage and the website exactly what to do.

Common questions

When should brand architecture be decided?

Before the outlets are named and before signage and wayfinding are designed — ideally alongside the positioning of the master brand.

Should a hotel restaurant have its own name?

If it needs to win guests from outside the hotel, usually yes — endorsed or standalone. If it mainly serves residents, the hotel’s name does more work than a new one.

Does brand architecture matter for a single restaurant?

It starts to matter the moment there is a second thing: a bakery counter, a private dining room, a retail range, a second site.
